Housing prices and availability are hot topics in Arvada today and the City is taking a close look at various affordable housing options in our community. Many Arvadans don't make enough money to comfortably pay rent or a mortgage, even while working a full-time job. Long-time residents are finding it difficult to stay in their homes or downsize affordably.
Neighborhood character, design, and quality are important to us all. As Arvada continues to grow, how will we blend the old with the new and re-purpose what needs re-imagining? We want to hear from you!

It would be helpful if the city could more proactively think about policies that can help to create more affordable housing for seniors. Rentals require salary levels that some seniors who have retired do not have. We had to give up on rentals when we tried to find an affordable housing for a parent in Arvada. Instead we bought a condo in Lakewood. We had considered adding a small structure in our yard; however, the 10 foot requirement from the property line meant we would have no yard for the rest of the family. And our neighbors mostly have garages... Continue reading

We have lived in Arvada for 40plus years, have owned two homes and raised our children here. We have always loved the small town feel of Arvada. As we age, we are thinking that we would love to stay in the community that we love, but in a smaller home, not an apartment. It would be so nice if Arvada had a plan for a small community of active seniors, like I have seen in other parts of the country. A place with a small yard, 2 bedrooms, garage, a little community within the larger community for seniors. Property we... Continue reading

I want to start by saying I love my parents and will be eternally grateful for letting us take over their basement. When my husband got out of the military a year ago we had plans in place, we even had several backups to our backup plan, and everyone of them crashed and burned. I had to quit my job to take care of the kids because we couldn't find affordable child care, and then the housing market in Arvada on top of that we are stuck in the basement for the foreseeable future. After 9 years on my own... Continue reading

If we want Arvada to continue to be a vibrant and desirable community, we must have housing that will allow all levels of income to be able to live here. It's easy to suggest that someone move where they can afford, but how far does that put them from their job? Would it be desirable to drive more than 30 miles each way for minimum wage or less than the current liveable wage? How much more are they willing to be spend in transportation to get to Arvada? Let's keep the momentum and keep Arvada a desirable place to live... Continue reading

I have been to many an Arvada City Council meeting and I know how important "community" is by the term's frequent invocation. It takes time to build a community, to get to know your neighbors, to build habits, to become familiar with your surroundings. Many people who rent never get the chance to partake in the community because they have to leave by the time they get invested. When rents constantly spike, and residents are constantly moving, not of their own volition, but out of economic necessity, community cannot be built. So if we believe community is so important, and... Continue reading

While my family of 4 was fortunate enough to be able to buy a house last year, the crazy housing market was pretty stressful. Anytime we saw something we liked, we knew we had to put in offer in immediately or it would be gone the next day. And housing prices have increased already since last year and I don't think we could have afforded to buy in Arvada had we waited even a few months.

My daughter was raised in Arvada, and she loves it here. She graduated from college 2 years ago and is now an Arvada middle school teacher. She would love to move out and live independently, but rents are so high in Arvada and even though interest rates are low, home prices in Arvada have made buying even a small house out of reach for her. I know it frustrates her that she is still dependent on her parents for housing. I would love for her to have that valuable experience many of us had of finding a nice little place... When we moved into the Alta Vista Subdivision in 1979 the Fitzmorris Cottages on Cole Dr had been turned into low income housing. In the almost 40 years that we have lived in this neighborhood we have seen many changes with the folks who have lived there. There have been all nationalities and all sizes of families and we have NEVER had a problem with anybody who has lived there. It has been a joy to see these families grow and thrive. I strongly urge that the high density housing that is being built in the Arvada area have a... Continue reading

This past year, my son was saddened when his dear neighborhood friend had to relocate to another area with his family due to unaffordable housing prices in our area. What a loss.
