Most residents will be able to choose to participate or not in February. Meantime, we want to know your views and questions.

Arvada residents care about efficient services and good value, and after a majority of residents called for improved waste hauling service with more recycling options, the City Council directed the City team to explore options to decrease waste hauling costs and increase recycling options for residents. After more than 18 months of research and public input, Council approved an organized waste hauling system for Arvada.

Expected Benefits of Organized Waste Hauling:

  • Fewer trucks on our roads will decrease wear and tear on our streets and reduce air and noise pollution.

  • Lower costs for most residents.

  • Recycling is included, so more residents have access to affordable recycling.

  • Better customer service for residents. The City’s contract requires a dedicated customer service center and a 99.9 percent accuracy rate. The City will hold the hauler accountable for their service level.

In June 2020, Arvada City Council passed an ordinance paving the way for a new program - Organized Waste Hauling. This program will offer a new choice for many residents who do not currently have organized waste hauling in their neighborhood. This program will provide an efficient service at a good value for many residents.

    Benefits of the program are:

    • Fewer trucks on our roads will decrease wear and tear on our streets and reduce air and noise pollution.
    • Lower costs for most residents.
    • Recycling is included, so more residents have access to affordable recycling.
    • Better customer service for residents. The City's contract requires a dedicated customer service center and a 99.9 percent accuracy rate.

The City's waste hauling program also preserves a resident's right to choose their own hauler.

The new program begins in July 2021. Residents will be invited to select their service level in February 2021. More information about available service levels can be found on the waste hauling project page. The City will also share updates on all communication channels.

Residents have consistently indicated that an efficient waste hauling system is important to them, and the City will deliver an efficient system at a good value.

Arvada residents have consistently indicated that an efficient waste hauling system is extremely important to them (85 percent in the 2015 and prior community surveys); and in the 2017 and 2019 Community surveys, two-thirds of residents supported the idea of an organized waste hauling and recycling system. In response to these surveys along with recommendations from the City’s Sustainability Advisory Committee, the City of Arvada explored organized waste hauling in our community over a two-year period; this included extensive community engagement opportunities.

Most recently, multiple public engagement sessions were conducted since introduction of the proposed waste hauling ordinance and presentation of the proposed contract to City Council. The team engaged in multiple engagement opportunities during this 6 week period between May 4, 2020 through June 15, 2020.

    Activities included:

    • May 28, 2020 remote public forum regarding organized waste hauling

    • In-person engagement events with City team members scheduled during the week of June 8, 2020

    • Online engagement through Speak Up Arvada.

A brief overview of engagement metrics from the May 2020 - June 2020 time period include the following:

    • 2100 visits to the project webpage in 30 days.

    • More than 270 feedback submissions on the Speak Up Arvada engagement platform.

    • More than 8,000 residents saw the City’s posts on Nextdoor about organized waste hauling.

    • Among the City’s other social media channels, Facebook posts in May 2020 reached 15,000 people, and May 2020 Twitter posts were viewed a total of 7,300 times.

    • The City featured the project twice in May 2020 in the ArvadaNews e-newsletter, each of which were read by approximately 50 percent of the more than 5,000 subscribers to the service.

Additional activities to support the community’s understanding of the project including producing a project video that aired on Channel 8 and social media, provided recorded information via telephone as part of the City’s “Engagement Hotline,” placed information in several editions of the Arvada Report, and produced Spanish translations of the project fact sheet and Frequently Asked Questions document. In the period between May 4, 2020 through June 15, 2020, the City received over 120 emails with questions and feedback.

These opportunities were part of a longer engagement process. In the approximately 18 months the Speak Up Arvada Waste Hauling project has been open, 4,300 residents viewed the project with 1,369 of those viewers taking the additional step of responding to a survey. The City team appreciates the perspectives, questions and concerns shared by residents throughout this process.
